Snug as Bugs in Rugs

A while ago, I ordered some really lovely tartan fabric to make rugs for my Julips. I only had three back then and there wasn't much of the fabric left, so all the horses I've acquired since were looking quite cold and sorry for themselves in my shelves. So, before Christmas, I ordered up some more of the fabric in different colours and patterns and set myself a challenge to make rugs for all the ponies. I also got some lovely soft microfleece for the inside lining instead of the usual stiff felt. They're very spoiled ponies!

I also ordered a few batches of random colours of grosgrain ribbon, so all the ponies also got headcollars!

In the end, two are still missing rugs - Ben the Clydesdale foal, (cause I got tired of sewing) and Stardust the CJP (cause I didn't have the right colour of fabric)

Tansel got a purple rug to match his headcollar. I didn't have binding that would go with it so I just stitched the outer fabric to the lining the wrong way out, cut a slit on the inside and turned it inside out. His was the first rug out of the new batch.

Rolo got a green and navy one. I did have navy binding, but as his main colour is dark green, I decided to leave it out this time. I really need to get some more colours!!

Penny's is a bright blue with gold accents. It's actually quite shiny thread which I really like. I think the belly straps ended up too far back, though, I'll have to move them forward a bit eventually!

The cheekstraps on her headcollar look a bit long here, but the noseband would be a bit too close to her eye if I had made them any shorter. I gave this headcollar a rolled throatlatch, too.

Maisie's has to be my favourite. It's a really nice, soft shade of pink, and the brown binding works better than I had expected!

I really love her headcollar too. I glued some flowery fabric to the noseband after I put it together, and it has golden accents at the end of the straps, which were done by wrapping a bit of fine wire around the ribbon and pressing it together with flat pliers.

Tornfalk's is quite simple, which might be cause I was getting a bit tired of stabbing myself with the needle!! I will add some belly straps at some point, I think. I turned the fabric of his rug a bit so the pattern is now diamonds instead of squares, which makes it more interesting, I think.

The cheek straps on his headcollar were painted with acrylics, just to add some interest.

Willoughby's rug has the same pattern as Rolo's, but in a smaller print.

He's so cute <3

Mel's is a really nice burgundy with navy, with a navy binding and a surcingle. It really fits him, I think!

His headcollar also has a rolled throatlatch, and I left out the strap that goes under the jaw to keep bulk down.

And Stardust also gets to show off his headcollar. It's a really nice minty green, now I just need to find a suitable fabric!
